About Maureen Eykelenboom

Maureen's career and personal living choices both demonstrate her strong commitment towards helping others.

After being a "stay at home Mom", she went back to school, then became the Manager of Volunteer Services spending five years with the Stony Plain Municipal Hospital and then another five at the Misericordia Community Hospital in Alberta. Maureen worked consistently to develop new programs that would enhance both patient care and the opportunities for volunteer satisfaction.

Since moving with her family to the Comox Valley in 1999, she has served as President of the Soroptomists International of Courtenay, and as a Director and Chair for the local Comox Valley Hospice Society and was a member of the Advocacy Committee with the National Canadian Hospice/Palliative Society.

In addition to her work with Boomer's Legacy, Maureen currently serves on the Executive Committee for the Military Families Fund and is a Peer Support Volunteer with the HOPE Program through the Department of National Defence and Veterans Affairs, providing support to family members of fallen soldiers.

One of the things Andrew wrote home about was putting a smile on a child's face. He said it was the most important thing about this tour. He was done that tour on August 9th 2006, but he volunteered to go on one last mission, which he died on. Maureen in an interview said "Because he volunteered, it made me feel like he was saying 'I volunteered to do my part, now mom it's your turn to do yours'. We knew the day after he was killed that we would start a foundation." That way, in a small way, they could turn this tragedy around.

Maureen lives in Comox with husband Hans, Andrew's father, who is her backbone of support. They are blessed with their oldest son Steven, his wife Shannon and soon to be born grandchild, who live outside of Grande Prairie; and with their middle son, Gordon, his wife Fiona and three young and beautiful grandsons, Caeden, Neil and Liam who live in Calgary.
